The death toll from a landslide triggered by heavy rain in Indonesia’s main island of Java has risen to 15 after rescuers found six more bodies buried in the mud while digging through muddy soil.
About 30 houses were buried in the landslide which crashed into the hilly village of Sirnaresmi village in West Java’s Sukabumi district just before sunset on Monday during New Year’s Eve celebrations.  Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesperson for Indonesia’s disaster management agency, said in a statement that rescuers are searching for 20 villagers believed to have been buried in the landslides.
National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said 60 people who lost their homes have been forced to move to a temporary shelter. Of 101 people affected, 63 are safe and three were injured, Nugroho said.
Rescue mission have resumed on Wednesday after being halted a day earlier due to bad weather.
Sirnaresmi village is located in a hilly zone prone to landslides. According to data from Indonesia’s volcano and geological disaster mitigation agency, there are 33 sub-districts in Sukabumi situated in areas with medium to high risks of landslides.
On December 22, the Anak Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Strait erupted and partially collapsed into the sea, causing a tsunami that killed at least 437 people on Java and Sumatra islands. At least 16 people are still missing and more than 33,700 residents were displaced.
