Scores of Zimbabwean civilians including a prominent activist have been detained and charged with public violence on Wednesday while others were beaten, during a heavy crackdown on dissent by security forces.
Police say they have arrested more than 200 people following the protests. Three people, including a police officer, died in violent demonstrations on Monday.
There was no immediate government comment on the series of arrests or allegations of violence by police and soldiers. Protesters also gathered outside Zimbabwean embassy in South Africa’s capital of Pretoria condemning detentions and demanding internet services and telephone connection to be brought back, after they were cut on Tuesday, so they could communicate with their relatives in Harare.
Wednesday was the third and final day of the stay-at-home protest called by unions in response to President Emmerson Mnangagwa increasing the price of fuel by more than 150 percent.
